Scott Westerfield's Uglies Series

Books 20, 21, 22, and 23: Scott Westerfield's Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras.

I love science fiction. I fell in love with it when I read Margaret L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time in elementary school. And I love series books (they take more than one day to read - it extends the experience).

So it's weird that when one of my students told me that I must read this series two years ago I didn't jump on it. I just got these books a few weeks ago, and I've run through them in no time at all.

I love how science fiction poses a "what if" question and answers it. What if pretty were the only important thing? What if we could re-wire our brains? What if other people could re-wire our brains? What great questions.

Sometimes, I'll admit, sci fi can be deliberately confusing at the beginning of the book. But these books are written with teens as their main audience - so while there is a lot of techy language and futuristic slang, it's accessible. And, it's accessible without going to the opposite edge and being too obvious.

I just ordered these. I'll get back to you after I read them. Of course, I just started Cut by Patricia McCormick yesterday... Haven't read much YA in a while. I think 2009 might be the year to get back into it. :)
